New Literature

During the Christmas holiday we celebrated Sinterklaas with the family. Sinterklaas has been paying close attention to my graduation as I was gifted four new books on Smart Textiles and Textile Design.

Kate Hartman – Make Wearable Electronics

Kate Hartman is an artist, technologist, and educator whose work spans the fields of physical computing, wearable electronics, and conceptual art. The book gives an introduction to smart textiles and explains the different aspects of making your own wearable. She starts of with the basics, but later on the more advanced projects are explained. Overall I got a better understanding how to work with my Arduino Lilypad and programming the Arduino code which I could use for the set-up of the materials test.

Crafting Wearables

Crafting Wearables is a book that gives an overview of what wearables have been designed from the past untill 2015. So it has a very fresh perspective on smart textiles. The book walks through the electrical engineering part of creating wearables, but also provides a basic understanding about textile design, e.g. weaving threads into textiles with a certain pattern.

Hedendaagse Weefpatronen – Margo Selby

Hedendaagse Weefpatronen shows ways to create your own pattern with different sorts of materials and threads. It presents basic patterns, but also more advanced ones. All patterns can be created with use of a simple handloom that has four to eight shafts.

The Mood Guide to Fabric and Fashion

Over 10 years ago, Tim Gunn and Project Runway introduced millions of viewers to New York’s ultimate fabric mecca, Mood Fabrics. The Mood Guide to Fabric and Fashion is the a guide that helps to make a decision what fabric to pick for your project. The people working at Mood help the reader to understand the fundamentals of textile design and fashion.
